Project Focus: Biodiversity conservation
Estimated cost: 15.000 Euros
INTRODUCTION
This strategic action plan on sustainable management of natural resources within Tombel Sub Division S.W Region Cameroon is referred as an ongoing study/research of the need of the Mbabe forest people (the indigenous people). The purpose required is to accelerate a participatory approach towards this invasive situation which will contribute to the implementation of ecosystem management services within this local community.
This project will be carried out by OREP staff. It outlines a set of strategic objectives targeted towards the support of local communities and conservation donors that are out to support the Mbabe/Ekep people in Eru vegetable conservation, depending on the means available. However the amount and quality of work level of OREP and that of the local communities for the implementation will depend on the quality of motivation/influence of the group and its approach to fight against the vulnerability of change/effect in all its damages.
OBJECTIVES:
OREP’s aims and objectives are geared towards creating awareness about Eru, a non timber forest product, excessive exploitation,
- To sensitize the rural communities about environmental hazards and consequences that are occurring.
- To mainstream women in environmental conservation, forest tenue rights and enterprise recognition, particularly in the domain of preservation and sales
- To enhance mass participation in the conservation of biodiversity, (non timber forest products) as a roles to mitigate climate change.
- To promote ecosystem management service like: Eru cultivation, Snail farming, Bee farming, Medicinal plants conservation, rabbits etc.
- To promote and educate communities on Agro forestry practices, forest tenue rights and Enterprise recognition, so as to improve on climate change adaptation, reduce emission deforestation and forest degradation (REDD).
- And to give the forest people a better understanding of the government policy in participation in forest tenue reforms.
Therefore the action plan 2012 stipulates additional approach in the Mbabe – Tombel forest community, with a considerable support in terms of man power, knowledge and financial resources that are available.
THE PROJECT PROPOSED ACTIVITIES INCLUDES:

- Identify the constrains/obstacle that are hindering the modernization of village in environmental issues.
- Look for alternative means of conserving natural resources that will reduce the encroachment of human population into the forest habitat.
- Plan and carryout small and medium size projects that will enhance the role of forest in mitigation and adopt to climate change.
2. Specific programmes will be organized for main streaming
women in non timber forests production and
commercialization. Youths and traditional practitioners, Illegal timber exploiters, will be involved in sustainable biodiversity conservation projects that will improve livelihoods, alleviate poverty and promote climate change investment by reducing emission from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD).
Training workshops:
Training workshops will be held for training of trainers, which will be targeted on what the project wants to achieve and how it will be achieved. Four workshops will be held to help clarify need or solution. Strategies that will focus directly on the project outcome. The workshop shall involve according to specific indicators. The first will be the outcome of consultative meetings with Chiefs of forest areas and decision makers. The second will be the result of the community appraisals. The third workshop/ seminar will focus on the outcome of evaluation of past activities. And the fourth workshop shall be based on analysis contained in the quarterly reports and manual. The follow up will focus on effectiveness of the implementation of projects.
To achieve these end a solid study and educational set up will be needed to reinforce (OREP’s) successful implementation, right down to the forest areas particularly the women and the rural poor.
Education, training sessions, rallies, workshops, seminars, drama and conferences will be organized in villages and communities involving people of all works of life. Because of Eru’s vegetable shortage affecting every domain of human wellbeing i.e. Ecosystem services provisioning services. We need great security, regulating services cultural services Basic materials for life good health, good social relations and freedom of choice and action for the communities taking into consideration, therefore encouragement of ecosystem management services. We seek for a constituent of the human wellbeing of not only our rural communities but the entire world in order to reduce this vulnerability. Therefore we need to mainstream forest adaption policies in to our action plan for 2011 and promote mitigation as to reduce emission deforestation and forest degradation (IREDD) through Eru cultivation/ conservation.
