Prices for basic staple food are back in the headlines—they are rising again. This is bad news for those among Africa’s poor who consume more food than what they can produce. Think especially of poor families living in cities: they spend the majority of their income on simple foodstuffs. Rising food prices are also having important macroeconomic impacts on many African countries since more and more food is being imported from the global market leading to worsening balances of trade. Just 5% of Africa’s imports of cereals come from other African countries. This issue is not going to go away. Demand for food will continue to increase, it is projected to double by 2020, and consumers will be increasingly located in Africa’s rapidly growing cities. . . . → Leer más: Africa Can Help Feed Africa Report (PDF – 2 799KB)

Regional integration seems to be the name of the game these days. As the dynamics of the multilateral trade scene are fizzling out, regional trade agreements are multiplying at an unprecedented pace. A recognition of the reality that many national markets alone are simply too small, for selling products, attracting investment, stimulating innovation and remaining competitive. Beyond trade and market integration, there are a host of other sound reasons to bundle forces at regional level and integrate. Politically it makes sense to strengthen the ties with your neighbours as this interdependence reduces the incentives for conflict. . . . → Leer más: GREAT Insights Nov 2012 Issue (PDF – 1 417 Kb)

While there has been some success in removing import duties within regional communities, a range of non-tariff and regulatory barriers still raise transaction costs and limit the movement of goods, services, people and capital across borders. The end-result is that Africa has integrated with the rest of the world faster than with itself. . . . → Leer más: Report on Deepening Regional Integration in Africa (PDF – 3 215 KB)
